High-Level Steps for Adding a Cognos Connection

Below are the high-level steps for adding a Cognos connection.

  1. Mouse hover over the  BI Connection menu icon and select COGNOS from the options that appear. The connection wizard for Cognos opens with the Basic Information page.
  2. On the Basic Information page, enter connection details, click Get to fetch namespaces, and click Test to verify if the conection is established successfully. Click Next to continue.
  3. On the Web Login page, specify a template and other advanced options. 
  4. Click Test again to verify whether the SSO connection is successful.
  5. Click Save to save the connection.
  6. Click Close to exit the wizard.

Cognos Connection Wizard 

The pages you need to set up in the Cognos connection wizard are described in the sequence below. 

Basic Information 

This page contains the following:

Connection Name

Enter a name for the Cognos connection.

Dispatcher URL

Enter the Dispatcher URL for the Cognos connection. Enter the URL must in the format: http:// <hostname>:<port number>/p2pd/servlet/dispatch.

User Name

Enter the username of the Cognos user.

Password

Enter the password of Cognos user.

Namespace

When connecting to Cognos, one of the attributes needed is the Cognos Namespace. Click the Get button to get the list of name spaces and select the desired namespace from the drop-down list.  Alternatively, the namespace can also be found from Security > Users, Groups, and Roles in Cognos Administration as shown below:  


BI Validator Groups

Select groups that will have access to the Cognos connection.

After the connection has been created successfully, the connection node for Cognos appears under the BI Connections explorer. Expanding the Cognos connection node displays Cognos reports. If a Cognos report has more than one version the user has subscribed to, BI Validator shows those report versions with a timestamp.

Web Login 

BI Validator can use Selenium or Active Directory to automate SSO/Web access. Select a template and apply it, or record a Selenium template on your and import it. For information on how to set up the Selenium connection, see the how-to-procedure here.

More Options

Import

Allows you to get a template from your computer into BI Validator. Click Import, browse and select a template, and then click Apply.

Export

Allows you to export the Selenium script.

Record Steps

Allows you to record the SSO login process using the Selenium IDE. Before you start recording the script, ensure that the Selenium IDE is added to the browser.

Advanced Options

Base URL

Base URL should be provided in the format same as sign-in / dashboard URL provided in the Basic Information page.

Use Custom Credentials

If you have different credentials for Web API, use custom credentials.

User Name and Password

Enter user credentials of the entered base URL. These credentials replace the Rest API user credentials. 

Available Login Template

A template contains automation instructions for the Selenium connection type. For example, you can have a template to log in to Cognos automatically from BI Validator. Create and apply a template by using the commands mentioned here.
